INEC Plans November Mock Accreditation Exercise Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a nationwide mock accreditation exercise scheduled for November 2026. This initiative aims to prepare the country’s electoral machinery ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the plan in Abuja, explaining that the goal is to test key technology under real field conditions before millions of voters head to the polls.

Rigorous Testing for Electoral Technology

The primary objective of the mock accreditation exercise is to evaluate the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other technological tools. By conducting a nationwide test, the commission hopes to identify potential technical glitches and operational bottlenecks early.

Key focus areas of the mock accreditation exercise include:

  • Testing BVAS Reliability: Checking fingerprint and facial recognition performance across diverse environments.
  • Assessing Network Connectivity: Evaluating real-time data transmission from polling units to central servers.
  • Staff Performance: Training and testing election officials under simulated Election Day pressures.

Building on Lessons from Off-Cycle Elections

Prof. Amupitan noted that the commission is using lessons learned from recent state elections to refine its strategy. Specifically, he pointed to the August 15 Osun governorship election as a positive benchmark for the upcoming mock accreditation exercise.

In that election, 94.5 percent of polling units opened on time for accreditation and voting by 8:30 a.m. The commission aims to replicate and improve upon this operational efficiency across all states in 2027.

Key Numbers for the 2027 General Elections

To ensure smooth operations, INEC is preparing for a massive nationwide deployment:

  • 1.4 Million Ad-Hoc Staff: Expected total workforce deployed across the country.
  • 176,000+ Polling Units: Total locations receiving equipment and personnel.
  • January 16, 2027: Scheduled date for Presidential and National Assembly elections.
  • February 6, 2027: Scheduled date for Governorship and State Assembly elections.

By conducting a thorough mock accreditation exercise in November, INEC aims to build public trust, fix technical weaknesses, and ensure a smooth voting process when the nation casts its ballots in early 2027.
