Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over the State of Nigeria’s Democracy
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has voiced deep concerns regarding the health and future of Nigeria’s democratic governance.
Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Obi delivered a direct assessment of the nation’s political landscape, accusing critical state institutions of systematically undermining democratic values and electoral integrity.
Key Institutions Under Scrutiny
During his address, Obi turned his focus toward the pillars responsible for upholding the rule of law and democratic accountability. He sharply criticized:
- The Judiciary: Pointing out growing public distrust in judicial outcomes and the handling of election petitions.
- The Legislature: Calling out lawmakers for failing to serve as an effective check on executive power.
- Electoral Bodies: Questioning the credibility and transparency of election management systems across the country.
According to Obi, when institutions meant to serve as the guardians of justice and fairness become compromised, the very foundation of constitutional democracy begins to crumble.

Obi cautioned that the normalization of flawed elections and institutional compromise carries serious, long-term consequences for Nigeria.
