Sen. Seriake Dickson Demands Full Senate Probe into Lopsided MDA Recruitments

The Federal Character Principle was embedded into the Nigerian Constitution for one fundamental reason: to ensure that no single ethnic group, state, or religion dominates the corridors of federal power. It was designed to guarantee every Nigerian a fair sense of belonging.

The Core Grievances: Who is to Blame?
Dickson’s intervention highlighted specific sectors where the abuse of the quota system has become a national crisis:
- Economic Exclusion (NNPC & CBN): He specifically pointed out that in major economic hubs like the NNPC, indigenes of oil-producing communities are frequently sidelined. The same marginalization, he noted, heavily plagues the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
- Ethnic Military & Security Services: Perhaps his most alarming warning was directed at the nation’s security architecture. Dickson noted that recruitment officers often favor candidates from their own regions, warning that building “ethnic military and services” actively compromises the nation’s capacity and weakens national security.
- Nepotism Over Merit: Instead of merit-based recruitment paired with equitable state representation, agency heads are hiring based on language, religion, and local government affiliation, breeding internal resentment.
The Senate’s Action Plan
To ensure this is not just another empty political debate, Senator Dickson demanded strict legislative oversight.
He heavily supported the motion to mandate the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs to conduct a ruthless, microscopic investigation into all MDAs. He insisted that the probe should not just stop at regional representation, but must “drill down” to the State and Local Government levels to expose the exact demographics of who is being hired and why.
The committee is expected to demand the employment details of all staff across federal agencies and submit a comprehensive report within three to six months.
