The political scene in Bayelsa State is currently facing a major crisis over a forced impeachment. The State Government is reportedly pushing the State House of Assembly to carry out the impeachment of the Sagbama Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Alice Tangi Allen. This impeachment process is causing a massive uproar because it completely ignores the rule of law.

An Impeachment Against Court Orders

Insiders state that there is heavy pressure from top officials to push this impeachment forward. The biggest issue with this impeachment is that a Yenagoa court already ordered all parties to maintain the status quo.

By pushing for the impeachment, the lawmakers are directly ignoring an active ex-parte injunction meant to stop any action until the court decides. Despite this clear legal order, the Assembly held a session where 17 out of 20 lawmakers present voted in favor of the impeachment.

The Reasons Given for the Impeachment

The Speaker of the House, Abraham Ingobere, stated that the impeachment was based on alleged gross misconduct. The specific claims driving the impeachment include the chairman’s failure to present monthly transparent briefings and the annual budget.

Following the impeachment decision, security agents quickly took over the local government secretariat to enforce the sudden change.

Public Outcry Over the Impeachment

This rapid impeachment has led to strong public reactions. Civil groups are actively speaking out against the impeachment. Specifically, the Women for 35% Initiative of the AJU Morgan Elumelu Foundation strongly condemned the impeachment, describing it as a major setback for women’s participation in politics.

Concerned citizens and stakeholders are now sounding the alarm over this impeachment. They are strongly demanding that the government respect due process and let the court make the final decision on this impeachment.
