Tinubu Faces Fresh Petition in Europe
President Bola Tinubu’s academic credentials are once again under the spotlight, and this time, the issue has crossed international borders. A fresh petition has just been submitted to the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
Who Sent the Petition?
The petition was delivered on Friday, August 14, 2026, by Kalu Kalu, a Nigerian lawyer and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He personally travelled to Brussels to submit the documents.
Kalu Kalu is accusing President Tinubu of submitting forged academic credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He claims this action bypassed the strict rules needed to run for the highest office in the land.
What Are the Main Accusations?
In his petition, Kalu Kalu raises several serious concerns:
- Forged Documents: He claims that the certificates presented to INEC were forged.
- Missing Details: He questions why the President failed to include details of the primary and secondary schools he attended in his official documents.
- Constitutional Breach: Kalu argues that if these allegations are true, they violate Section 137(1)(j) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. This section clearly states that anyone who presents a forged certificate to INEC is not qualified to be President.
Why Brussels?
Taking this matter to the European Union (EU) adds a huge international angle to a controversy that has been brewing at home for a long time. Kalu Kalu is asking the EU to intervene, describing the situation as a “subversion of constitutional order in Nigeria”.
