Catholic Bishops Send a Strong Message to President Tinubu

During a recent high-level visit to the Presidential Villa, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) did not sugarcoat the realities facing the country. In a direct and powerful message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the religious leaders laid out the deep pains and fears of everyday citizens.

Led by the CBCN President, Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso, the delegation delivered a clear assessment of the nation’s current struggles, stating plainly: “Our nation is bleeding.”

Here is a breakdown of the major issues the Bishops raised during the meeting.

Economic Hardship and Rising Insecurity

The Catholic Bishops did not hold back when discussing the severe economic strain on Nigerians. They pointed to the rising cost of living, persistent insecurity, failing road infrastructure, and a struggling power sector as key issues hurting the public.

While they acknowledged that the President has expressed empathy for the people’s suffering, Archbishop Ndagoso made it clear that empathy is no longer enough.

Fears of a One-Party State

Moving beyond the economy and security, the CBCN raised serious concerns about the health of Nigeria’s democracy.

Archbishop Ndagoso reminded President Tinubu of his own personal history as a strong opposition figure during the military era. The Bishops expressed widespread public fear that the political space is shrinking, leading to anxiety that Nigeria might be slowly drifting toward a one-party state.

They urged the President to direct all elected officeholders within his party to ensure a level playing field for all political actors, stressing that his true legacy should be the protection of democratic institutions, not their erosion.

A Warning Ahead of the 2027 Elections

Looking towards the future, the Catholic leaders delivered a firm warning regarding the 2027 general elections. They noted that public trust in the electoral process is dropping, pointing to declining voter turnout in recent polls as proof of voter disenchantment.

To prevent an “avoidable disaster,” the Bishops demanded that the 2027 elections must be free, fair, transparent, and credible. They called on the Federal Government to:

• Provide adequate and timely funding for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
• Make it easier for citizens to access their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The President’s Response

In response to these heavy concerns, President Tinubu assured the Bishops that his administration is working hard to stabilize the nation. He pointed to ongoing security restructuring and investments in military equipment as proof that the government is tackling insecurity head-on.

The President also defended his economic reforms, stating that the nation is moving away from the edge of collapse toward prosperity. Regarding the 2027 elections, Tinubu promised a fair fight but warned his political opponents that he would not easily give up his seat.
