Despite recent attempts by the Presidency to dismiss his criticisms and accuse him of abusing his clerical privilege, Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal John Onaiyekan is standing his ground. In a fresh interview, the respected cleric has doubled down on his stance, issuing a powerful call to action for all Nigerians.

Stop Accepting Things at Face Value

Cardinal Onaiyekan expressed deep concern over how easily citizens are adjusting to unacceptable conditions. He urged Nigerians to stop taking things at face value and to actively challenge the narratives handed down to them by political leaders.

Most importantly, he called on the public to refuse to accept the claim that Nigeria is currently “working” when the reality on the ground shows otherwise.

Rejecting the “New Normal”

The Cardinal did not hold back in outlining the specific issues that Nigerians must stop tolerating:

  • Certificate Forgery: He warned against normalizing deceit, urging citizens to completely reject the idea that certificate forgery among leaders is acceptable.
  • Electoral Fraud: Onaiyekan strongly condemned the acceptance of rigged elections.
  • The “Go to Court” Rhetoric: He heavily criticized the growing trend where politicians manipulate election results and then arrogantly tell their aggrieved opponents and citizens to “just go to court.”

A Warning for the Future

Wrapping up his message, Cardinal Onaiyekan issued a strong warning to both the government and the citizens. He made it clear that a nation cannot build lasting peace or progress on a foundation of injustice and deceit.

According to the Cardinal, there are grave consequences for letting these dangerous practices slide, and the country will eventually pay the price if it continues on this path.
