Massive Payroll Fraud: ICPC Uncovers Over 900 Ghost Workers in Government
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has exposed a massive case of payroll fraud within the government. They found shocking details of individuals stealing public money through fake employment records.
14 Family Members on the Payroll
During their investigation, the ICPC discovered some unbelievable acts of greed. In one major case, a government official secretly added 14 family members to the official payroll.
In another shocking discovery, one single person was caught receiving 13 different salaries every month. These actions allowed corrupt individuals to drain huge amounts of money meant for real government workers.
Fake Names and Wrong Bank Accounts
The ICPC Chairman, Musa Aliyu, shared these details during a recent meeting in Abuja. He explained that the commission has identified about 900 suspected ghost workers so far. The names of these suspects have now been published so they can be properly verified.
Aliyu noted that the fraudsters used very sneaky methods. They inserted completely fake names into the government payrolls. In many cases, the bank accounts receiving the salaries belonged to entirely different people, not the names listed as the employees.
Billions Saved and the Need for Better Tech
The fight against this type of corruption is already showing huge results. The ICPC chairman proudly announced that in 2024, the commission successfully recovered over ₦24 billion in suspected ghost pension funds.
To stop this from happening again, Aliyu stressed that the government must improve its systems. He called for a stronger use of modern data and technology to track payments, secure the payroll, and protect public resources from being stolen.
